General Overview

The Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation is a non-profit foundation established by the Federal Republic of Germany for the promotion of international research cooperation. It enables highly qualified scholars not resident in Germany to spend extended periods of research in Germany and promotes the ensuing academic contacts. The Alexander von Humboldt Association of America is the US liaison to the AvH Foundation. For more information on these organizations, visit their respective homepages.

The Urbana-Champaign Chapter of the AvH Association was founded six years ago by Harry D. Krause, Professor (Emeritus) of Law. All members are former AvH Foundation fellows or award recipients. Chapter meetings are held once a semester, and include lectures/discussion and social activities.

Every year, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants up to:

  • 500 research fellowships to highly qualified foreign scholars
  • 150 research awards to internationally recognized foreign scholars
  • 150 Feodor Lynen Research Fellowships to highly qualified German scholars to study abroad
  • 12 Max Planck Research Awards for International Cooperation
  • 10 German Chancellor Scholarships for prospective leaders from the U.S.

New programs include sponsoring regional and interdisciplinary conferences, and Summer Research Fellowships designed for junior faculty in the U.S. Further information about the Humboldt Foundation will be available at the meeting and at www.avh.de.
