Applications for Admission and for Financial Aid

The recommended deadline date is January 15 for submission of applications. We will accept applications after that date, but cannot always guarantee that their will be any financial aid available after the first selection process.

Requirements for Admission: Graduates of Universities in the United States

Admission to graduate study in the department is on a competitive basis. Applicants for the programs in the Master of Arts in German or the Master of Arts in the Teaching of German must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent, with substantial credit for advanced undergraduate courses in German language and literature, and should have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (A=4.0) in the last 60 hours of course work for the bachelor's degree. An undergraduate major in German is highly desirable. Reasonable fluency in German is essential for successful completion of the program. Applicants are also required to submit a sample of their written work (in English or German or both, i.e. a term or research paper).

Applicants for the Ph.D. level must have an M.A. degree and should have a grade point average of at least 3.5 in graduate work. Applicants for the graduate degree programs are asked to take the Graduate Record Examination and to have their scores reported to the department. Applicants are also required to submit a sample of their written work (in English or German or both, i.e. a term or research paper).

Admission Requirements: International Students

The requirements are those stated above. In addition, the following special stipulations apply:

l. Any one of the following academic requirements qualifies an applicant for admission to the Graduate College:

University Diplom
•2 years or 4 semesters of further study after the Zwischenprüfungszeugnis, Zwischenzeugnis, Vordiplom, or Vorprüfungszeugnis
Abitur plus 3 years or 6 semesters of study
Magister Artium
erstes/e/e Staatsexamen/Staatsprüfung/staatliche Prüfung für das Lehramt
erste juristische Staatsprüfung or Referendarexamen

2. A 2.5 grade average or better on the German scale.

3. Verification of sufficient knowledge of English (TOEFL test: U of I minimum score is 550 on the paper-based examination, 213 on the computer-based examination - See Graduate College Handbook).

4. Translated and notarized complete academic records (e.g., Studienzeugnisse, Scheine).

If discrepancies exist, the Graduate Colege or University policies take precedence. These publications are available online or you may requrest copies from the Graduate College, 202 Coble Hall.

A petition may be filed to request deviation from these policies and procedures. Petition forms are available in the department office. Deviation from policies or procedures stated herein or from other applicable regulations must be approved by the head of the department or the dean of the Graduate College as appropriate. It is strongly suggested that you file the petition before the deviation occurs.
