Assistant Professor Bruce Murray

Professor Bruce Murray received his Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Minnesota. He completed his Master's Degree at Middlebury College and B.A. in German and English at Luther College. As an undergraduate junior, he participated in the Institute of European Studies program in Freiburg. While a student at Middlebury he spent one year at the Johannes Gutenberg Universität in Mainz. With the help of a Fulbright Grant he completed his dissertation research at the Humboldt Universität and Freie Universität in Berlin. He also has spent a number of summers in Graz, working with the American Institute of Musical Studies.

Professor Murray's research interests include German film history, the literature and culture of the Weimar Republic, and topics in contemporary German cultural studies. He has published a book on film in the Weimar Republic and co-edited another on the historiography of German cinema and television. He also has published a variety of articles on the treatment of National Socialism in postwar German cinema.

As director of the Austria-Illinois Exchange Program, Professor Murray teaches courses on modern German literature and drama, the history of German culture, and topics in German studies. In his capacity as Guest Professor at the Wirtschaftsuniversität, he offers intermediate and advanced level courses in business German language and culture to exchange students who come from all over the world to study in Vienna. He also conducts internship workshops and seminars on topics ranging from the on-going integration of Central European countries to the advantages and disadvantages of Austrian membership in the European Union.
